Rosario - Working With Work Items - Part 1

So I've fired up my Rosario August 2007 CTP VPC, to start looking at Rosario.  If you want to check out Rosario yourself, the VPC is available for download.  You can't download the Rosario bits and install them yourself at this point, so the VPC is your only option.

Once I'm logged into my VPC, it's time to start up Visual Studio. Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 -> Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.  Wait a minute, you say.  Why am I starting VS2008, and not a version of VS called Rosario?  Good question, but don't worry, you are still working with Rosario, regardless of what it is called in the VPC.  Anyway, this opens Visual Studio for me.  Once I get into Visual Studio, I open up Team Explorer.

With this VPC, Microsoft is trying to show off two new features in Rosario.  One is hierarchical work items, and the other is the new support for Manual Tests and the Manual Test Case Runner. One nice thing that Microsoft did with this VPC is include a pre-created Team Project, filled with work items.  This allows us to delve quickly into looking at the hierarchical work item support, without having to spend a lot of time creating test data.  Thanks guys!

First thing I want to do is see what work items they loaded for me. The easiest way to do that is to run the All Work Item query.  In Team Explorer, I select AUG07ROSARIOCTP -> eBanking -> Work Items -> Team Queries -> All Work Items, and double click it.  This returns, obviously, a list of all the work items in this team Project.

Wow, that's a lot of work items.  108 to be exact.  As you can see, this team project has several work item types in it, some of which we haven't see before.  Don't worry, by the time I'm done blogging about Rosario we'll have probably covered most if not all of them.  I'm curious what all work item types are available with this Team Project.  To see this, I go to Team Explorer, right click on the Work Items folder in the eBanking Team Project, and then Add Work Item.  The available work item types are:

  • Bug
  • Business Objective
  • Change Request
  • Feature
  • Issue
  • Requirement
  • Review
  • Risk
  • Run Definition
  • Task
  • Test Case
  • Test Component

Next post I'll review a Business Objective work item, and we'll start looking at some of the new features of work items in Rosario.
