Rosario - Working With Work Items - Part 2

So I'm back in my Rosario VPC, in Visual Studio.  I've opened up Team Explorer, drilled down into the eBanking Team Project, and run the All Work Items Query.  I want to investigate the Business Objective Work Item Type a little more, so I double-click on Work Item #33 - Enable cross-sales.  This opens the work item for me to look at:

Starting at the top and working our way down, it looks like a normal work item.  It has a title, areas and iterations.  But when you get to the bottom is where you see the first new concept in Rosario.  Beside the Description field is a Parent's and Children view.  Rosario now supports hierarchical work items.  So you can have work items that are parents of other work items.  In the above example, this work item has two child work items, Requirement 36 and Requirement 37.  It also has one parent work item, Business Objective #31.  From this view, you can open the parent or child work items, add new child work items, edit existing links to child/parent work items, or delete links to child/parent work items.  You'll find later that you have other avenues for linking your work items.

If I wanted to add another child work item to this work item from here, I could just click the Add button.  This opens the Add Link window, shown below:

The only link type you have access to when you go this route is the Child link type.  This makes the work item you select a child of your current work item, in effect making your work item a parent of the one you select.  You can enter a work item id, or browse for one.  Just at random, to show how this works, I'm going to choose work item #53, which has the title "This is a Feature with no Test Cases".  As a comment, I'll enter "Just testing adding a child link".  So, before I click the OK button on my Add Link window, it looks like this:

I click the OK button, and it returns me to my Business Objective work item.  As you can see, Feature #53 is now listed as a child work item of my Business Objective:

Next post we'll delve into the whole parent/child thing some more, and look at some of the other tabs on our Business Objective  work item.
