President Xi Jinping sent a message of sympathy to United States President Joe Biden on Friday over the latter's COVID-19 infection.

Xi said in the message that learning about Biden's infection with the coronavirus, he would like to convey his sincere sympathy to him and wished him a speedy recovery.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced on Thursday morning that Biden, 79, had tested positive for COVID-19 and is "experiencing very mild symptoms".

Biden said on social media on Thursday that he's "doing great" despite his COVID-19 infection.

"Thanks for your concern," Biden wrote alongside a picture of him working behind a desk in quarantine. "Keeping busy!"

His wife, Jill Biden, said on social media on Thursday that she had tested negative for COVID-19, and would continue to follow public health guidance and wear a mask.

US Vice-President Kamala Harris, who met with Biden on Tuesday, tested negative on Thursday. Her office said she would remain masked and continue her schedule as planned.
