State Councilor and Defense Minister Li Shangfu met with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Thursday, as he called on both sides to promote the China-India border situation to "be under regular control at an early date".

The meeting was conducted on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Defense Ministers' Meeting on Friday.

During the meeting, the two defense leaders exchanged views on relations between the two countries and militaries, according to a Friday news release by China's Ministry of National Defense.

Li said that, as major neighboring countries and important developing countries, China and India share far more common interests than differences.

He stressed that both sides should view bilateral relations and each other's development from a comprehensive, long-term and strategic perspective and jointly contribute to world and regional peace and stability.

Li said currently the border situation between China and India is stable on the whole and the two sides have maintained communication through military and diplomatic channels.

He called on both sides to take a long-term view, put the boundary issue in an appropriate position in bilateral relations and promote the border situation to be under regular control at an early date, expressing hope that the two sides would work together to continuously enhance mutual trust between the two militaries and make due contributions to the development of bilateral relations.
